The Brook

A favorite childhood campsite of mine comes to mind as I recall my divorce recovery process. The stream behind this campsite was fast and shallow. The riverbed, shaded from above by a canopy of trees, contained rocks and pebbles of varying sizes. I loved to try to make my way across the water—sometimes with shoes on—sometimes barefoot. I’d start out by trying to jump from one large rock to another without getting wet. However, with the moving water and shadows cast from the surrounding trees, it was often difficult to see the best path across the stream. I’d step out to what I thought was a sturdy rock only to find it turning over under me feet. When I walked barefooted, I sometimes slipped on the algae-covered rocks. Either way, I ended up getting wet as often as I made the journey across dry. At best, only my feet got wet.

Occasionally, a deeper pool of water had developed and I ended up in the water up to my knees getting the cuffs of my shorts wet. At worst, I sometimes took a seat rather forcefully in the cold water. In any case, I always got back on my travels across the brook and eventually made it to the other bank. There were even times as I was looking more carefully into the water that I realized there were hidden treasures under the overturned rock: small fish, a frog or sometimes surprisingly beautiful stones.

As I proceeded through my divorce recovery and restructuring into a single parent of then teen-aged children, I needed to realize that there were slippery rock and deep pools in my path. But I found out that I could make it to the other side if I kept picking my “soggy self” up and proceeding ahead. And yes, there were hidden treasures galore along the way. I just needed to look up to God to help me focus my eyes on the blessing he had for me on my journey. He helped me traverse the “brook” during those difficult, scary, sometimes soggy days and He will help you cross your brook and get to the other side also.
